Julia Golden was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Maryland. She got her B.A. in Theatre Design and Production from the University of Maryland, College Park, and then spent one year at Arena Stage teaching playwriting, stage managing, and organizing classroom visits throughout D.C. public schools. She then spent a year in Portland, Oregon, where she worked in the box office at Portland Center Stage and went hiking on the weekends.

Research interests include information access, library studies, performance studies, visual theatre, and how laughter is shared in different cultures.
